California Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to extinguish illegal pot. The governor, who was instrumental in legalizing recreational marijuana, proposed last week that California National Guard personnel currently deployed at the border be transferred to a federally funded Counterdrug Task Force.
"The Border ‘emergency’ is a manufactured crisis. And California will not be part of this political theater. Which is why I have given the National Guard a new mission. They will refocus on the real threats facing our state,” Governor Newsom said in a statement.
Those "threats" include illegal grows in connection with a flourishing marijuana black market in California. According to the Los Angeles Times, the black market was valued at about $3.7 billion last year, which is about four times as much as the legal market.
